Background: Adam studied Law and Arts before completing his PhD in the area of human rights related to migration, the workplace and criminal law. He then worked as a public interest lawyer representing Melbourne's lowest paid workers and unions. This work has also included cases involving freedom of speech rights and the implementation of international law conventions.
Key Policy Background: Adam has been responsible for several parliamentary portfolios including treasury, employment and workplace relations, industry and innovation, science and research and the art.
Relevant Information/Links to Community: Adam has maintained strong and compassionate policy position in regards to the rights of people seeking asylum and refugees. He has been vocal throughout the public sphere promoting the Green’s refugee policy outline. This includes increasing Australia’s humanitarian intake program to 50,000, limiting security and health assessments to 30 days and increasing regional cooperation with Indonesia, Malaysia.
Record on Issues Related to Refugees: Adam has demonstrated a moderately strong position when voting on legislation related to people seeking asylum and refugees. He voted strongly for ending immigration detention on Manus Island and Nauru, and strongly opposed regional processing, whilst voting moderately on increasing scrutiny of asylum seeker management and voting a mixture of both for and against on implementing refugee and protection conventions.
