Recently we met with our local member, Ms Terri Butler MP for Griffith, and were pleased when she said that the ALP is committed to the following:

  1. Supporting the UNHCR and providing funding of $450 million;
  2. A Government policy that is in line with the refugee convention;
  3. To stop Fast Track process and Temporary Protection Visas; and
  4. Having a 90 day turn around for people in detention (see https://www.asrc.org.au/2017/05/10/fastfacts/ for more information)

Significantly, if in power, Ms Butler says she wants all people seeking asylum in Australia to immediately have permanent residency.

Ms Butler also said that we will not see any Labor member using the refugee topic as a negative electoral tool.

Fittingly, shortly after our visit, Ms Butler posted the following to her FB account: https://www.facebook.com/terri.m.spence/posts/10157389039173475

Thank you Terri!

#RightTrack meetings are happening across the country:

If there isn’t a meeting in your local area, you can organise your own meeting.

Local communities have been meeting their MPs asking them to get on the #RightTrack for people seeking asylum.
