Representatives of the #RightTrack Jagajaga Conversations Project recently met with The Hon. Jenny Macklin MP at Eltham High School to present their July 2018 Interim Report.
The Interim Report is the result of engaging with more than 100 community members over the last six months and gathering their views on the current asylum-seeking process. So far, we have found that the majority of conversation participants were shocked that the current process does not align with their values, and they called for a fair process that is non-discriminatory, timely, transparent, cost-efficient and supportive. The report highlighted the need for a fair process that aligns with the community's values and views and Jenny was very receptive to the results of the report.
Speaking with the delegation of one committee member, a conversation facilitator and a high school conversation participant, Jenny agreed that the recent cuts to income support for people seeking asylum (SRSS) need to be remedied in order to make the process a supportive one.
In light of this, Jenny has promised to advocate for Labor's forthcoming policy platform to specifically commit to providing income support, trauma counselling and case management to people seeking asylum while their applications are being processed. She will be keeping us updated over the next few weeks.
Thanks for a productive meeting Jenny!
